Starting in 1600 with trading interests, Britain gradually colonized and ruled India (1858-1947). The British imposed oppressive unjust laws, plundered the nation's wealth, and used divide-and-rule policies. Their domination resulted in creating a subjugated, demoralized, impoverished, and communally divided country. In 1915, Mahatma Gandhi stepped into these bleak circumstances with a will to change the mindset of the depressed population in such a way that India achieved liberation in the truest sense.
