Ruffling the Status Quo
Dandi March provided impetus to the hopes of the disenchanted masses and compelled the imperialists to give their attention. With this march, Gandhi underlined the oppressiveness of the unjust British laws, found the pulse of the country, and set an example of the common man's power to the world.

"Wherever possible, civil disobedience of salt should be started. These laws can be violated in three ways. It is an offense to manufacture salt wherever there are facilities for doing so. The possession and sale of contraband salt, which includes natural salt or salt earth, is also an offense. The purchasers of such salt will be equally guilty. To carry away the natural salt deposits on the seashore is likewise violation of law. So is the hawking of such salt. In short, you may choose any one or all of these devices to break the salt monopoly."

"Writing in Young India, his English weekly, [Mahatma] observed: 'There is no article like salt, outside water, by taxing which the State can reach even the starving millions, the rich, the maimed and utterly helpless. The tax constitutes, therefore, the most inhuman poll tax the ingenuity of man can devise." His decision aroused worldwide interest, as this American cartoon shows.'"
