Selfless Service
Gandhi’s fasts and his courting of jails were a large part of his life and they inspired the nation to take the moral high ground in its struggle. By courting jail, Gandhi fought for the rights of his people. By fasting, Gandhi, as a responsible leader, calmed tempers, induced rationality, and appealed to the inner conscience of his people to give up wrongful actions.

"Even Gandhi fell into moments of weakness and despair when it seemed that people were not ready for nonviolence, when traditions of inequality seemed inescapable. What did he do when he felt he couldn’t transform others hearts toward a higher ideal? He doubled his efforts to transform himself. His attention went to his own self-purification, self-dedication, and selflessness."
